Isobel is a cheerleader dating a football player. There is a big rival game coming up that Isobel should be preparing for, but instead, her English teacher has assigned her a huge project to complete with a boy she's never even talked to, Varen.

Varen is your typical gothic boy. He dresses mainly in black, wears eyeliner and has bulky chains attached to his pants. He's less than thrilled to be working with Isobel on their project. The only good thing is they chose an author that he loves, Edgar Allan Poe.
Strange things begin to happen between Isobel and Varen the more they work on the project together. Isobel's boyfriend, Brad, becomes insanely jealous, Isobel's friends aren't hanging out with her anymore, Varen stops seeing his "sort of" girlfriend, Lucy, and Isobel begins seeing things and having strange visitors in her dreams.
It turns out, there's something there between Varen and Isobel, and through the works of Edgar Allan Poe, we are taken on a deep and dark ride into another world created by Varen that Isobel becomes a part of.
A story about love, horror and dark terror was the perfect mix in this book. When it ended, I was devastated. I'm not sure that I've been this involved with book characters since The Hunger Games. The book is so well written and while I'm not a fan of gothic romance and Edgar Allan Poe, I needed more when this ended. Good news? There's a second book that apparently picks up where this left off. I'm hesitant to pick it up because I hate unnecessary, drawn out sagas just for the sake of making money, but I'm pretty sure this author is not going to do that. I'm curious to see what happens with Isobel and Varen and if they beat the odds and find each other again.

Characters like Katniss? SOLD! :)

Ooh glad to see a review on this one. I'm pretty sure it's on my to-read list, but it hasn't been super public, so I forgot about it :)
