Book Review: Because of Mr. Terupt

Age: Grade 5-8
Genre: Realistic Fiction
Format: Hardcover

For 7 students, it's their 5th grade year and Mr. Terupt is their teacher. He's new and young so the students are unsure what to expect from him, but from the first day they meet him, they know this year is not going to be what they expected.

Told from the alternating perspective of 7 students, follow this story of bullying, laughter, friendship and tragedy all rolled into one as these students experience a year that will change their life. The reader will hear from the bully, the brainiac, the quiet one and many others.

While this book is definitely more geared to grades 5-8 and is not my usual genre, I really enjoyed this story. I fell in love with Mr. Terupt and his students and rooted for him all the way. The personalities of the student perspectives were very spot on for a fifth grade class.

I finished the book in 2 days because I just couldn't put it down. I'm looking forward to reading the sequel, Mr. Terupt Falls Again.
